Shafali Verma, at 15, became the youngest Indian to play a T20I when she made her debut against South Africa in Surat in 2019, and a few months later became the youngest Indian player to score an international fifty. Shafali was still only 16 when she went into India’s 2020 T20 World Cup campaign as the no. 1-ranked ICC T20I batter in the world, and her performances played a pivotal role in India’s run to the final.
A player who possesses raw power at the top of the order and one who can take the game away from the opposition in no time when she clicks, Shafali has that X-factor as a batter that is such a luxury for any team. The Rohtak, Haryana-born Shafali had not even turned 18 years old when she became an all-format player for India after making her Test and ODI debuts within a span of two weeks in June 2021. She played a thrilling knock of 96 on Test debut against England in Bristol.
Shafali also demonstrated her leadership qualities when she led India to the title in the inaugural ICC U-19 Women's T20 World Cup in 2023. The swashbuckling opening batter not only made her first international hundred in the 2024 Test against South Africa, but converted it into a 197-ball 205 as India dominated the match.
As fate would have it, Shafali, who was not part of India’s original squad at the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, not only came in as an injury replacement ahead of the semi-final but also produced a Player of the Match-winning performance in the final against South Africa, scoring 87 runs and picking up two wickets.
Still only 21 years old, Shafali is a big part of the future of Indian cricket.
